What Is Coming for 2027: The New Cars Worth Knowing About

BMW X5

BMW's midsize SUV is redesigned for 2027. The standard 3.0-liter turbocharged six now makes 394 horsepower, roughly 20 more than before. The X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid pairs a 308-hp inline-six with a 194-hp electric motor for 483 hp combined, and BMW estimates 44 miles of electric range, about 15% better than the outgoing version.

Inside is the bigger change. The traditional gauge cluster is replaced by a slim panoramic screen running along the base of the windshield, working with a 3D head-up display and a 17.9-inch center touchscreen. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic are standard.

Price: $69,800 to $79,800. On sale: the X5 40 xDrive in late 2026, then the X5 40, X5 50e xDrive and iX5 60 xDrive in spring 2027. A V8-powered M version follows in late 2027.

Audi Q9 and SQ9

Audi's answer to the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade and Mercedes-Benz GLS. The Q9 uses a 429-hp 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6. The SQ9 gets a 591-hp 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. Both run an eight-speed automatic with standard all-wheel drive, adaptive air suspension, and optional all-wheel steering.

Worth noting for anyone tired of touchscreen-only interiors: the Q9 keeps conventional controls for the mirrors, windows and lights, and every automatic door can be operated by a physical control as well as the screen or Audi's app. It will also be the first Audi with a partial automated driving system that allows hands-off operation on certain highways.

Price: $87,700 to $118,000. On sale: late 2026.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500

A full redesign, from work truck to luxury and off-road trims. Four powertrains: two new V8s at 5.7 and 6.6 liters, a turbocharged four-cylinder and a diesel inline-six. One transmission across the range, a 10-speed automatic. Seven trims, three of them lifted for off-road use.

Price: estimated $39,000 to $75,000. On sale: late 2026.

Honda Prelude

The nameplate returns as a hybrid coupe rather than a return to the 1990s formula, which is either the most sensible or the most disappointing thing about it, depending on what you wanted. Honda's hybrid system has been the strongest part of its lineup this year, and the company set a monthly hybrid record of 42,583 units in May.

On sale: 2026.

Others on the way

Consumer Reports also flags a redesigned Mazda CX-5, a new Lexus ES, a new Lexus NX, the Infiniti QX65, a redesigned Kia Telluride, a new Kia Seltos, a redesigned Jeep Cherokee, Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport updates, the Mercedes-Benz CLA, GLA, GLB, GLE and S-Class, the Lucid Gravity, the Subaru Trailseeker and Uncharted, and the Scout Terra and Traveler.

Two of those deserve a note for anyone watching the electric market. The Ram 1500 REV is still listed as coming, though the all-electric version has been widely reported as scrapped in favour of a range-extended setup. And the Slate Truck is on the list, a low-cost electric pickup that has been the most-watched affordable EV project of the year.

How to use a list like this

A new-generation model is usually the best time to buy the outgoing one. Dealers need to clear inventory, the outgoing model is fully debugged after years of production, and the discount is real. The trade-off is resale value, which takes a hit the moment a redesigned version arrives on the lot.

If you are shopping a BMW X5 or a Silverado right now, that trade-off is live. It is worth pricing out both ways before you decide which side of it you want to be on.
